About

Sycorax Journal is an online magazine dedicated to speculative poetry, focusing on fantasy. We love lush and lyrical language tuned to ancient and traditional myths and fairy tales as well as newly forged stories.  Come here to find poems that take you to new worlds, stop your heart cold or set it afire, poems that let you soar on dragon wings.

Sycorax Press is a micropress dedicated to speculative poetry, focusing on fantasy.  For now, our goal is to publish 2-4 volumes per year.

Sycorax Press was founded by Sandi Leibowitz in 2018, when she became dismayed at how few presses publish books of speculative verse, especially fantasy rather than science fiction or horror. The Press derives its name from the mother of Caliban in Shakespeare’s play The Tempest.  Though Sycorax never appears onstage—she dies before the play opens—she informs it.  She is the spirit of the magical island.  A person of power, she becomes disenfranchised by Prospero.  Speculative poetry, despite its magic, is also often shoved aside and deemed of little value.

Sandi Leibowitz is a Queens, New York-based writer whose works of speculative poetry and fiction have appeared in numerous genre magazines and anthologies. She has won second and third place Dwarf Stars and been nominated for the Rhysling, Best of the Net and Pushcart Prize awards.  Her book of speculative verse, THE BONE-JOINER, was the first venture of Sycorax Press.
